What is a long stay?
A long stay is a dog or cat that has been in our care for more than 100 days for various reasons. Many of these pets have been with us for months, even years!
How much does it cost to care for them?
The cost of care for each pet varies depending on medical needs, behavioral challenges, age of the pet, and a number of other factors. Many of these pets arrive at Bideawee with extensive medical needs, even emergency surgeries! However, we do know that it costs an average of $57 a day to house and feed each pet. Many of these pets have been with us for multiple years – do the math on that!
Why haven't they been adopted yet?
At Bideawee, we believe adoption is a relationship, not a transaction. Many of these pets have challenges – they’ve been through traumatic situations and have to learn to trust people again. Some have extensive medical needs and need time to rehabilitate, and some just are older and less “desirable” for the average person. But we know the right fit is out there for each of these long stays.
Where can I find these pets?
Most of our long-stays are located at our Westhampton location, where they are away from the hustle and bustle of the city and can truly thrive. If you’re interested in adoption, you visit the profile of each pet on our Adoption page.
Will my support really make a difference?
All of these costs may seem overwhelming – will my sponsorship actually help these pets? The answer is yes – your recurring gift provides support for the care of these pets in tangible ways – funding medical care, training resources, and more. A little goes a long way when these pets can count on your contribution monthly!
What happens when my sponsored pet is adopted?
If you choose a pet to sponsor and this pet finds their forever home (woohoo!), you will automatically be assigned a new deserving pet to sponsor. Alternatively, you can also select the animal you want to sponsor, instead of the one picked for you. We will notify you when this happens so that you can cheer on your former sponsoree and learn more about your new sponsored pet. Unfortunately, sometimes an adopter will return a pet to the shelter, so we’ll wait 4-6 weeks to let you know, just to make sure their forever home truly is forever.
